NTM Senior Project Manager Mark Bowen, PE, CFM will be teaching two, two-hour courses for PowerCorpsPHL in Philadelphia, PA, on February 5, 2016, and February 12, 2016. The course, “Stormwater Management Primer,” will explain the important role stormwater management plays in protecting the city and the world in this era of a changing climate. Students will learn the fundamentals of how rainfall changes to floodwaters and get a brief view of the tools used to control stormwater runoff. They will perform a simplified runoff calculation and be shown two other standard equations for calculating flow. The course will end with a discussion of the required education and an overview of careers in stormwater management.
PowerCorpsPHL, launched in September 2013, is an AmeriCorps program designed to support Mayor Michael A. Nutter’s environmental stewardship initiatives, as well as the City of Philadelphia’s youth violence prevention and workforce development priorities. Partnering with EducationWorks and the Philadelphia Youth Network, PowerCorpsPHL will annually enroll 100 individuals, ages 18-26, in a nine-month program: six months of full-time service as AmeriCorps members with City departments followed by three months of intensive job placement support.
