NTM Principal Jeff MacKay, PE, CPESC and NTM Senior Project Manager Mark D. Bowen, PE, CFM will be presenting at the 2015 Villanova Urban Stormwater Partnership (VUSP) Pennsylvania Stormwater Management Symposium October 14-15, 2015, at Villanova University.
Jeff will be presenting “PennDOT’s Blueprint for the Nation’s Largest SCM Maintenance Program.” With the number of SCMs that PennDOT owns expected to double in the next 10 years and the difficulty of tracking and keeping up with their long-term operations and maintenance obligations, this session will cover the major SCM Maintenance Program’s overhaul to meet PennDOT’s MS4 and NPDES construction permit commitments. It will highlight the key program components, explain the numerous challenges, and preview future program enhancements.
Mark will be presenting “It Takes a Team – Designing SCMs for Long-term Maintenance.” This session will provide a view of how stormwater management design has evolved to address SMCs’ longevity and maintenance, and reinforces that it takes a team of academics, designers, regulators, developers, contractors, and inspectors to achieve water quality protection through stormwater management. Real world examples of SMC failures, the required repairs, and a discussion of lessons learned in the process will be presented using original photographs and recently published EPA, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and Philadelphia Water Department guidelines.
Mark will also be presenting with NTM’s Sarah Ryan a poster, “Balancing Stormwater Objectives – Practical and Regulatory Limitations to Achieving a True Water Balance.” This poster is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Stormwater Technical Workgroup (PaSTW). It displays volumes of stormwater as determined by several standard analysis methods and illustrates how commonly used stormwater design criteria may not achieve the best results for the environment. Mark is Chairman of PaSTW.
