Name: Dave Miraglia, PE
Title: Project Manager
Department: Structures
- What is an early memory from your first year at NTM?
We were asked to perform a third-party review of bridge retrofits for the AREVA move, which was bringing a 1,700 kip steam generator to Three Mile Island. It was interesting how such a concentrated load could create potential failure issues out of normally benign mechanisms. As others have mentioned, the move to our current location was also a big step. I fondly recall Francisco and I had a two-day series of site visits in District 10 and missed all of the lifting.
- What has been one of your most interesting projects and why?
The most interesting project was the replacement of SR 901 and SR 3005 over the West Branch of the Schuylkill River. The project was our first bridge project as the prime consultant. While the two bridges were in sight of each other, they could not function as detours, so a temporary run-around was also required. SR 3005 utilized all precast components except for the curved deck which had to be cast-in-place. This was again the first time we had utilized precast substructures and approach slabs.
- What are some things you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my wife and three children. We enjoy woodworking, boardgames, experiencing the outdoors, and working in our orchard.
- What is one of your proudest NTM moments or biggest accomplishments?
My proudest moment would have to be winning an NTM cookoff trophy for mini-B.L.T. sandwiches using candied bacon. Second to that, I think our biggest accomplishment is the team that we have built here and the history of quality projects that have been completed as a result. Major accomplishments are often the fruit of the having the goal of being better than yesterday, and the synergy created when your cohorts want the same.
