NTM is proud to have participated in the inaugural Transportation YOU Club, organized by WTS Central PA. During the last school year (November 2016 to June 2017), WTS Central PA members and other industry volunteers partnered with the Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA to launch the Transportation YOU Club. Meetings where held monthly, where the girls were introduced to topics in the transportation industry, including surveying, bridge engineering, macroinvertebrate identification and multimodal transportation planning, and worked through real life scenarios.
In addition to our sponsorship, NTM staff members Emily Bernzott, PE, Carrie Weinhold, EIT, Bethany Shumaker, EIT, CSI, and Bethany Kavulich, PE, CPESC volunteered for many of these meetings. There were approximately 57 Scouts, ranging from daisies to ambassadors, who attended from Harrisburg, York, and surrounding areas. The Girl Scout STEM Expo was also held in April. At the event, small groups participated in a rollercoaster building activity, where students designed, built, and tested their own coasters, using different tubes and pipes to create hills and loops.
Planning has begun for next year’s program and WTS will be continuing to work with the Girl Scouts monthly, from January to May 2018. The article linked below highlights one of the events NTM sponsored, covering the importance of multimodal transportation planning and transit design.
