NTM Engineering, Inc. (NTM) participated in SMPS Central PA’s Reef Ball Build & Clean Up on June 7th. This was an inaugural event for SMPS, which took place at the Susquehanna Heritage Columbia Crossing River Trails Center in Columbia, PA. Out of the 19 teams that participated, NTM had two full teams to help complete the reef balls.
The event started with the Reef Ball Build & Clean Up. A reef ball is a designed artificial reef module which mimics the structure and function of a natural reef. Special concrete additives make up the Reef Ball concrete, with a pH similar to sea water, which assures compatibility with marine environments and enhances its attractiveness to colonizing organisms. The reefs will be placed in the Chesapeake Bay.
As a firm that is known for our specialized water resources expertise, NTM was glad to be part of this important project. Our daily work helps to keep our streams and waterways free from the disturbance that construction may cause. We hope that these 19 reef balls will make an important impact on preserving, protecting, and enhancing the Chesapeake Bay and its inhabitants.
