Carrie Weinhold, EIT, a Designer for NTM, organized the “Women in Engineering” program on February 16 for Twin Valley Middle School in Elverson, PA. The event was for 8th grade girls who have shown an interest in entering the field of engineering. The goal is to inspire the girls to build towards a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) career, including engineers, scientists, and architects.
Carrie, along with another Twin Valley Alumni, planned the full-day event. They emailed all the volunteers, coordinated with the PLTW (Project Lead the Way/Tech Ed) teachers, and planned fun, low-cost activates for the event. Over 60 eighth grade girls participated in the three different hands-on-projects designed to simulate real world, hands-on challenges that might be found in the field of engineering today.
After the event, Carrie also spoke with a group of over 50 5th and 6th grade girls. She shared information about her job and the industry itself. They had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about a day-in-the-life of an engineer.
