The SR 2035 Section 352 project involved replacing state-owned, temporary pipe culverts that conveyed Mud Run Creek under Suscon Road. The project was necessary because the corrugated metal pipe culverts were temporary replacement structures and were structurally deficient. The pipe culverts were installed at the site in late 2012, after the pre-existing bridge had to be removed under emergency conditions.
NTM was responsible for the TS&L design submission for the bridge. The pipe culverts were replaced with a single-span precast reinforced concrete box culvert. A concrete box culvert was the proposed replacement structure type, because precast pieces saved time during construction when traffic was using the detour. The concrete box culvert was designed with 45-degree skewed end sections to limit the amount of environmental disturbance.
The bridge is located in an approximate FEMA Zone A flood study area. NTM performed the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of Mud Run Creek and secured the GP-11 waterway permit for the project.
